Shirovasti is a specific ayurveda treatment which is mainly indicated in Vata Rogas (neurological disorders) and jathrudwa gata Rogas( Head and Neck and ENT disorders). Shirovasti is a process in which warm medicated oil is made to stay stagnant on the scalp for a specific time in a properly formed frame made up of leather or rexine sheet.
Shirovasti is head therapy, which is one of the major external oil therapy procedures in Ayurvedic treatment. The term ‘Shiro’ means head and ‘vasti’ means container holding liquids. The medicated oil prescribed is warmed and poured into a hollow cap placed on the head and is allowed to stand for some time.
Shirovasti Treatment is divided into Three Stages:
In Purva Karma, The Ashta Vaidya’s will diagnosis the patient and will prefer the medicines depending on the patient’s condition. The medicated oil is selected on the basis of the patient’s condition (Rogi Bala) Strength of the Patient and Roga Bala( Severity of the Disease). Before beginning the procedure proper counseling is given to the Patient by the doctors in GOC Resorts, as it requires much patience to carry out the whole procedure. With the help of leather or rexine sheet a cap is prepared according to the measurement of patient’s head. The cap is fixed on the head with the help of dough in such a way that the medicine which is poured inside it should not leak and stand firmly till the completion of the procedure.
The Pradhana Karma Starts by pouring dedicated amount of warm oil in to the cap till it covers the scalp. The medicine is made to stay stagnant for a certain period depending on the condition of the disease and the patient.
The Shirovasti Procedure stops through Pushyat Karma through which the oil is removed from the dough, and gentle abhyanga (massage) is done and the person is adviced to take rest for a while.
